Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) is a procedure done in office used to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. Minimally invasive, Dr. Castleberry performs this procedure under local anesthesia in Starkville Urology’s clinic.
Also called radiofrequency ablation or RF therapy for enlarged prostate, this therapy is the primary treatment for patients who are not interested in medical therapy and are unwilling to undergo prostate surgery. During TUNA, a visual instrument is inserted through the tip of the penis into the tube that carries urine from the bladder. Dr. Castleberry guides the placement of tiny needles into the patient’s prostrate, and radio waves are passed through the needles to create scar tissue. This scarring shrinks the prostate tissue, which opens up the urinary channel so urine can flow easily.
As with TUMT, Dr. Castleberry evaluates his patients’ symptoms, other health problems they may have, and the size and shape of the prostate, before recommending TUNA.
