Transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) is a procedure done in office that treats urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate and is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.
TUMT involves the insertion of a specially designed urinary catheter in the bladder. This allows a microwave antenna to be positioned within the prostate, where it heats and destroys excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow. TUMT is one of several options for treating an enlarged prostate. Dr. Castleberry evaluates his patients’ symptoms, other health problems they may have, and the size and shape of the prostate, before recommending TUMT.
Patients choose TUMT as it effectively provides a one-time treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hypertrophy as an alternative to medication, transurethral needle ablation (TUNA), transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), open prostatic enucleation or other surgical therapies.
